In The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, mutagens are powerful mutation-triggering agents and (with patch 1.3 installed) alchemy ingredients. They allow you to raise your abilities even further. Mutagens can be acquired in two ways: you can loot them from defeated enemy corpses or you can create them as random by-products of alchemy. To undergo mutation, enter meditation and then select the 'Character' option and find a skill with a mutagen slot. Mutations cannot be reversed; as such, it is strongly recommended that you never use lesser or basic mutagens, only greater ones. It is also recommended to have the Impregnation talent from the alchemy tree at level 2 before using any mutagens, because that skill does not affect mutagens which have already been applied.

Impregnation exploit with The Operator[edit | edit source]

In chapter 1 greater mutagens are almost nonexistent, apart from 2 greater vitality mutagens which are guaranteed to drop from endrega queens. In chapter 2 you would have to resort to heavy farming to fill few mutagen slots with greater mutagens. Mutagen: Hit 'C' key to open character screen. Click on 'Training', look at the tiny circle top right of the top 2 talents. Right click on talent, select your mutagen and then apply. Same applies to 'Swordsmanship' talents, although it'll be quite awhile until you reach the end of the tree where the mutagen slots appear.

(For those not focusing on the alchemy tree) As of patch 1.1, it is possible to enjoy the Impregnation benefit without ultimately keeping the skill. One may put enough points in the alchemy tree to get Impregnation to level 2, then invest in other trees (not the alchemy tree) as much as possible to get Mutagen skills. In Chapter 3, before you meet The Operator during the quest From a Bygone Era, make sure you have all the mutagens applied already. Then accept his offer to reallocate your talents (using the mysterious artifact). In the immediate talent distribution screen, re-pick all the skills in trees except the alchemy tree. The improved mutagens will remain even though you no longer have Impregnation.

Finding Greater Mutagens[edit | edit source]

If you have seen a frustratingly low number of greater mutagen drops from slain enemies, you might try allocating some points into Side Effect. With 2 points in this alchemy tree skill there will be a 10% chance of mutagens being created as a byproduct of alchemy. Often multiple mutagens are created simultaneously from the same alchemical concoction. There are some alchemical concoctions that require only a few common ingredients, such as the Grapeshot bomb. You can create them one at a time, and they occasionally produce several greater mutagens in the same go. If you do not want to spend the points in that skill, you could do it early in the game to harvest mutagens, then use the impregnation exploit described above.

Turn and Face the Strange Quest

This quest will begin with a letter from Yennefer. She tells you about Professor Moreau and his work into Witcher mutations. You will need to locate his journal in the cemetery at the Lebioda's Gate just outside the city. Use the 'Old Map of Toussaint,' to locate the underwater elven ruin, Dol Naev'de, Valley of the Nine. Here you will fight your way to Professor Moreau's laboratory, where you will learn about his quest to cure the witcher mutations.

He developed a mutated giant centipede albumen, but unfortunately, his experiment failed upon curing the witcher mutations. Professor Moreau, however, succeeded in creating more witcher mutations.

There are twelve new mutation abilities:

Toxic Blood: Each time you're injured in melee combat, the attacking enemy receives 1.5% damage for every point of your Toxicity level, up to 411% max.
Euphoria: Each Toxicity point increases damage by swords and sign intensity by 0.75% to 205.5% max.
Mutated Skin: Each Adrenaline point decreases damage received by 15% (up to 45%).
Magic Sensibilities: Signs deal critical hit chance and damage increase from 38% to 178% damage. Enemies killed by sign critical hits explode.
Piercing Cold: When Aard is cast, you have an additional 25% chance of freezing enemies. Those who are simultaneously knocked down and frozen, die. Those not frozen, receive additional 2820 damage.
Conductors of Magic: When a sword is drawn, magic, unique, and witcher swords increase sign damage by 50%.
Deadly Counter: Sword attacks deal 25% more damage to human enemies immune to counterattack and monsters.
Bloodbath: Each fatal blow made by sword dismembers the enemy or activates a finisher. Each blow made in melee combat increases attack power by 5% until combat ends. Bonus is lost upon taking damage.
